Bryan Delsite hired by Robert Morris

MOON TWP. — After seven years as an assistant at Bucknell University, Southern Columbia graduate Bryan Delsite last week was named coach of Robert Morris University’s women’s track and field and cross country teams.

“I wasn’t in any rush to leave Bucknell, but this is a unique position,” Delsite said. “The chance to be a head coach again was appealing, and Robert Morris is near and dear to my heart — it’s where I went to graduate school and started my collegiate coaching career.

“... My wife is from Pittsburgh and my children were all born in Pittsburgh. They’re all excited to go back home.”

Delsite was a coach for the Colonials from 1994-1996.

He didn’t go far, in terms of geography, coaching Duquesne’s track and field and cross country teams for 15 years. It was there that Delsite was four times named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and guided the men’s and women’s teams to every school record in both indoor and outdoor track and field.

The program also scored the most points in school history at the conference championships under Delsite’s direction.

While at Bucknell, Delsite helped the Bison claim five Patriot League cross country championships and three titles in both indoor and outdoor track and field.

And even though he wasn’t looking for a way out of Lewisburg, he’s excited for what’s in store.

“This program is a little bit of a rebuild,” Delsite said. “There will be some changes and there could be challenges, but I’m going to be able to put my footprint on a program a little bit and I’m excited.”

And don’t be surprised any if success follows him into his new role.

Ranked No. 28 in the Press Enterprise’s 50 Greatest Sports Figures of the Century in 1999, the accolades started coming in early.

He collected nine PIAA Class 2A state track and field trophies before graduating from Southern in 1989. In addition, he also held the state’s triple jump record of 48 feet, 1 inch, where it stood for 10 years.

He also won a District 4 championship in the triple jump all four years and was a long jump winner his sophomore through senior years.

Competing for Syracuse, he also held the Orange record in the triple jump at 52-10.
