Fleming released by Green Bay
Julian Fleming will have to run a different route to pursue his NFL dreams.
The undrafted free agent out of Penn State originally signed with the Green Bay Packers last week. Unfortunately, when going for a physical, the 24-year-old Fleming had some health concerns pop up that the franchise was concerned about and released the wide receiver on Saturday.
The Southern Columbia grad confirmed these concerns, saying he tore his hip again — something for which he had surgery in his sophomore year of high school — and bulging disks in his back.
"These were things I wasn't aware of heading into the physical," said Fleming, who wouldn't comment if they were nagging him any. "These were some lingering stuff they were worried about."
Not all hope is lost for Fleming, a former five-star college recruit and No. 1 ranked player to come out of Pennsylvania. The four-year Ohio State player has had calls with the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers.
Fleming will gauge interest with the three clubs, attend minicamps — with the Commanders and Ravens both having their respective rookie minicamps Friday and Saturday — and proceed with his workouts and rehab.
Fleming possibly foreshadowed the rough start to his NFL career when talking at his pro day, saying he's overcome obstacles before. He's looking to do so one more time to get things jump-started.
"I've had a lot of ups and downs in my career. And I've always come out on top of every hurdle that I've [run] into, whatever, whether it be injuries, a bad game," Fleming said in April. "I sat behind great guys at Ohio State for two years. It was great to learn from [that]. ... I stayed the course and I did what was asked."
Now the receiver, known for his great downfield blocking skills, hopes to be on the mend and catch on with another team.
