USA Luge promotes Gavin Davis
BERWICK — Gavin Davis had a good feeling he was going to be promoted to the USA Luge Junior National "B" Team.
But as USA Luge sent out the email last week, Davis still couldn't help but feel nervous when opening the message.
Not only was there the chance he wasn't moving up from the "C" team, but he was also worried about having to get acquainted with a new doubles partner on the sled.
Davis had nothing to worry about. While many of his senior classmates are preparing for college, Davis got that promotion, which was made official Wednesday, and is now set to embark on permanent residency at the country's luge headquarters in Lake Placid, New York. Unlike his peers, though, Davis already has the advantage seeing as it's a place he's already familiar with and he'll be rooming with someone he knows rather well: doubles partner Logan Barnes.
The two are coming off a third-place finish in the Junior Luge World Cup standings and were runners-up at the USA Nationals.
"With the promotion comes a little more funding for competitions and a spot to live in Lake Placid until my luge career ends," Davis said. "I'll take some of my workout items to train with while I'm there as well as some items to make it feel like home."
Davis is making the full-time move in mid-June and begins summer training later that month. The duo begins winter training as Lake Placid's artificial ice track starts freezing over in the early fall and competitions will begin in November.
